When reminded that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Future Goals

His goal is to secure his first major next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

Club Support

As he was leaving, one final question came up. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his new triumphs?

"Provided that they stop conceding four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a laugh. "Improvements are being made. There's a hint of positivity around."

On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that he is seeing the bright side.
