The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
