The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
