Qatar's Short Race and Grand Prix Qualifying: Real-Time Updates

Introduction

Our correspondent is about to begin to cover today's short race (2pm GMT) and qualifying (18:00 GMT).

Real-Time Updates

Starting Lap Period

The formation lap has started.

Circuit Details

We have nineteen laps around the lengthiest track in Formula 1, the commentator informs us.

Final Moments

The countdown is underway.

Driver Situation

One point in Max Verstappen's favour: his fellow driver Tsunoda is ahead of him by a single position. It's improbable to mess with Red Bull's main man.

Media Conversations

Sky's internal discussion now: Gary Neville is at the Mercedes team.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to the 2026 season, speaking with Adrian Newey about his promotion to the team team principal.

Grid Details

Just 16 cars on the grid. It was another bad qualifying for the driver: following his result of 20th and last in Las Vegas, leading to an eighth-place finish in the main race, he failed to advance of the first qualifying segment again on Friday. The team have consequently made changes to his setup and so he begins from the starting area.

Aston Martin's Stroll and the Alpine duo of Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Driver Comments

"We'll use the experience for the next day," says Hadjar, 11th on the grid. Expect plenty of learning.

Team Standings

It's not all about the drivers' title: The team have dominated the team championship but the team, with a forty-point advantage over Red Bull, will be hoping to seal second place during this event. George Russell can help them achieve that from second place, and Antonelli will start just behind Verstappen.

Past Performance

Oscar Piastri was victorious then – as he did last year, too. The driver from McLaren is attempting a hat-trick.

Short Race Importance

Right, approximately twenty minutes remaining till the sprint race gets under way. Unless something goes wrong, it's greatest value is as an indication of what is to come, rather than highly important in its itself, with just eight championship points awarded to the victor. Mind you, second place here was enough for Verstappen to become champion in a prior season.

Max Verstappen claimed the championship after Pérez crashes out of Qatar GP sprint race.
