Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.

A senior delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.

The source said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the region

Civilian Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."

"After we see all home again, we can relax again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports 48 stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester one woman explained: "We need do any agreement needed for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis want the hostilities to finish in return for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, particularly my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."

Health Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the south region of the city indicated another two dead people had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medical staff stated.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
