Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
