Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Criticism
Individuals from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a disgusting and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his party to defend the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
