Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped our Modern World

There are numerous candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Prior to automated sawing, building a modest trading ship necessitated around 10 sawyers working for three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than a week.”

Thanks to their rapid automated saw, that turned logs to planks with virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels faster compared to anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic as well as cultural supremacy across the continent and the world.

The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “humanity’s initial true industrial machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part converted the rotary movement into vertical action to power the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward a measured step each stroke.

“Each element seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts in order that the machine acted in a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every downward stroke while advancing on every upward motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental parts.”
