Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
